Canada's Black speaks after WAG Team final
DOHA: Comments from Elsabeth (Ellie) Black of Canada after her team placed fourth in the women’s team final at Aspire Dome on Tuesday.
On her team’s ability to recover from mistakes on uneven bars and balance beam:
“You have to try to be aggressive and make it up for your team. If there’s a mistake, the rest of (the team members) have to have their back and keep fighting. I was really, really proud of the team and what they were able to do. They came back from a few mistakes and still had a very great result.”
On Canada’s fourth-place finish, its best in Worlds history:
“We wanted to go out there and show the best gymnastics we could, and where that would put us, it would put us. In the team final, anything’s possible for any team, so you just have to try your best and see what everyone is able to do on that day.
You never know where you’ll be able to place, but that’s still history for us. We’ve never come fourth in a (Worlds) team final so I’m very happy with that.”
On finishing 0.752 points behind bronze medalist China:“Seeing how close we were to China was incredible. It’s a boost of confidence for Canadian gymnastics and our team. Even with a few mistakes, it’s something to be really proud of. To be the fourth best country out there today is unbelievable, and I told (my team-mates) that. Even with a few mistakes they kept fighting, putting it all out there and supporting each other. We were able to finish really strongly on vault, and kind of sit back and enjoy the rest.”
