Canada's Padurariu reacts after winning balance beam silver

DOHA: Comments from Anne-Marie Padurariu of Canada after she won silver on balance beam in the women’s apparatus finals at Aspire Dome on Saturday.

On her performance and finishing ahead of bronze medalist Simone Biles of the USA:

“It’s amazing. Being able to beat the top gymnast in the world on beam is a dream come true.”

On her expectations prior to the championships, and her feelings on exceeding them:

“In the back of mind I at least wanted to make the beam final, but I was mostly taking it one step at a time, focusing on training and what I needed to do to make the final. After knowing that I made to the final, it was unbelievable and then the medal. The hard work of my coaches and all the support back home has really paid off.”

On her strategy after seeing gymnasts who competed ahead of her make mistakes:

“I tried not to focus on everyone’s performance, I tried just to focus on my performance, on what I had to do to have a good routine. I guess if I had paid attention, there would have probably been a lot more pressure. There wasn’t, and that was good. I think that’s what helped me stay on the beam.”

On if her fall on balance beam in Team final on Tuesday added pressure on her:

“I really wanted redemption after that. I was really upset. It was kind of hard to stay positive after that day, but my coaches and team-mates were really supportive, and that was really nice. The confidence just needed to be there and definitely made me hungry for redemption, and it happened.”
