China tops 10th subdivision, qualifies second to team final
DOHA: Defending all-around champion Xiao Ruoteng of China served notice that he remains the gymnast to beat through his commanding performance in the 10th and last subdivision of men’s qualifications at the 48th FIG Artistic Gymnastics Worlds Championships at Aspire Dome on Friday.
Xiao’s stellar routines helped China compile a team total score of 257.836 points, which led the subdivision and ranked it second heading into Monday’s team final.
Apart from a pair of falls on pommel horse, China’s performance was more than satisfactory to Xiao, who advanced to the all-around final in first place.
“It was perfect except for pommel horse,” said Xiao of his team’s showing.
The top eight teams and individuals in the All-around and apparatus rankings in the qualification competition advance to the finals at the Worlds where a maximum of two gymnasts per country may advance to any one individual final.
The three medal-winning nations in the team final clinch team berths to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games while the top 24 teams advance full teams to the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.
