Downie sisters return as Great Britain announce team

DOHA: Downie sisters, Becky and Ellie, were named among the five-member Great Britain women’s team for the 48th FIG Artistic World Championships.

The event take place at the Aspire Dome from October 25 to November 3.

Competitions will be held in the all-around, individual apparatus and team events with the main focus for many nations centred on the team competition which presents an early opportunity for Olympic qualification.

Becky and Ellie, who make a welcome return after being sidelined due to injury, are joined by Kelly Simm, Georgia-Mae Fenton and Alice Kinsella.

Lucy Stanhope, a member of the silver-winning team at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, will the reserve.

Ellie, the 2017 All-around European champion and the first to win a major all-around title for her country, will be competing in Doha for the first time in 18 months after an ankle injury sustained last year.

She had surgery in August, 2017, followed by another operation in April this year.

Becky, on the other hand, has had a niggling elbow problems which kept her out of competition for the greater part of the year.

“If you’d have asked me how 2018 would go at the start of this year I could never have predicted so much drama but it’s an absolute honour to be selected to represent Great Britain at the 2018 World Championships. “It’s even more special to be back with Ellie after an absolute emotional rollercoaster 18 months!! Excited to see what this team can do together,” Becky tweeted.

The men’s team was recently confirmed as Dom Cunningham, Max Whitlock MBE, Joe Fraser, Nile Wilson and James Hall.
