‘Excellent facilities motivated us to bid for Worlds’
Doha: It had been four years since Doha won the bid to host the next year’s Artistic World Championships in Kuwait when the FIG Ex-Co picked up the city to organise the prestigious event.
“Qatar’s decision to bid for the biggest artistic gymnastics championships was in response to calls from different quarters, including the international gymnastics federation,” said Qatar Gymnastics Federation President Ali Ahmed Al Hitmi, who is also the Organising Committee CEO. “They felt we’ve had all that it takes to host a successful event,”
Thus it was a history of sorts as Doha became the first Middle East city to host the mega event for the first time.
“There had been requests even by the FIG executives considering the quality of facilities and the experience we’ve by hosting the annual Artistic World Cup Series. Hence, we decided to go ahead and bid to win the rights,” he added.
The 2018 Worlds will also be the qualifiers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
