Happy to be back after complicated surgery: Verniaiev
DOHA: Ukraine’s 2016 Olympic champion in parallel bars Oleg Verniaiev is happy to return to action at the 48th FIG Artistic World Championships after a long injury layoff.
Verniaiev had to undergo surgeries and subsequent rehabilitation for a torn ligament in his leg and shoulder in January in Germany.
“I’m very happy to be back in action despite missing more than seven months of training due to my rehabilitation,” Verniaiev told sivtelegram.media.
Verniaiev was expected to miss the entire season, but a quick recovery from his injuries has now seen him making the strong team of 12 gymnasts (six males and females each) representing Ukraine at the event to be held here from October 25 to November 3.
The 25-year-old, who won a silver at the 2017 Montreal Worlds, said the surgical operations were complex and the recovery even harder.
“The worst is behind us now and I feel ready and fit. I suffered very much during those seven months. I still feel the unbearable ache in my leg and shoulder,” he added.
The Ukrainian participated in the FIG Challenge Cup in Szombathely, Hungary last month where he won gold in pommel horse and silver in floor exercise and vault.
The competition was his first after being on the sidelines for several months.
