I cannot say when I will stop, says 43-year-old Chusovitina
DOHA: More than twice the age of many of her rivals, 43-year-old Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan refuses to consider herself a grand dame among girls.
“I have never had such thoughts,” Chusovitina told www.worldgymdoha18.com after Tuesday’s podium training at Aspire Dome, in preparation for the 48th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships that begins on Thursday.
“When I see young girls training, I want them to look at me and get inspired by me.”
The venerable Chusovitina, who won her first Worlds medals in 1991 and made her first of seven Olympic Games starts in Barcelona, Spain, in 1992, has no plans to fade into retirement any year soon. She wants to continue competing until at least the 2020 Tokyo Games.
“I just love doing gymnastics so much,” Chusovitina said. “I can’t say when I will stop because I don’t know yet. I really want to make it to Tokyo, and then we’ll see.” (Pic Credit: Asian Gymnastics Union)
