Indian gymnasts to undergo selection trials ahead of Doha Worlds
DOHA: Olympian Dipa Karmakar and Rakesh Patra alongside other top Indian gymnasts will take part in a selection trials in New Delhi from September 29-30 ahead of the 48th FIG Artistic World Championships.
Karmakar came fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics while Patra finished eighth in the rings final at the 2017 Asian Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.
The trial, to be conducted by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), will confirm the gymnasts who make the cut for the showpiece event in Qatar.
"A maximum of six members, three boys and three girls, will be selected for the Worlds," Indian coach GS Bawa told news agency PTI.
Karmakar returned to active participation in July when she bagged India's first-ever gold medal at the FIG World Cup in Mersin, Turkey, after missing action for more than a year following a surgery to treat ACL injury.
But at the Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, last month, the Tripura girl had a poor landing in the first attempt and finished last among the eight competitors in vault with team-mates Pranati Nayak and Aruna Reddy.
Nayak (13.425) and Reddy (13.350) finished ahead of Karmakar, who scored 13.225.
