Mikulak speaks after USA finish fourth in MAG Team final
DOHA: Comments from Sam Mikulak of the USA after his team placed fourth in the men’s team final at Aspire Dome on Monday.
On the USA team’s fourth-place finish:
“We did the job we came out to do. We’re all much better gymnasts today than we were yesterday. This is an experience for a lifetime, and now, we put the pressure on a lot of teams who I think weren’t looking at us the way they’re going to start looking at us.”
On moving past his fall on pommel horse in the first rotation to perform well on the next five apparatus:
“You just have to put it behind you. These guys (his team-mates) are really good at getting you juiced up for the next routine. It wasn’t the start I wanted but these guys hit way better than in qualifications, so if anything, they carried me through it.”
On his younger team-mates:
“Coming into this, no one really saw us as being up on that podium, so we were coming in as underdogs. These guys are young. For a lot of them it’s their first Worlds. They came out and showed better than I did, the veteran, so that’s going to be a huge confidence-booster.”
