‘More age-group tournaments need of the hour’
QATAR Gymnastics Federation (QGF) Assistant General Secretary Abeer Al Buainain said more age-group tournaments could help the sport gain a firm foothold in the country.
“The QGF has been working hard to promote the sport through its various programmes, but we need more such competitions. There’re full-fledged age-group club tournaments and that has helped us find talented youngsters,” said Al Buainain.
Several youngsters represented Qatar at the GCC Championships in the last couple of years.
“The federation has a dedicated programme for schools. The age-group tournaments encourage these educational institutions to showcase their students’ talents. Our aim is to promote the sport at the grass-roots level,” she added.
The QGF talent spotters pick the best performers from these tournaments and recommend them to national camps.
“We select the best to train with national teams. Depending on their performances, they’re then given the opportunity to compete in international tournaments.
“But we don’t put pressure on them to win medals. We want them to learn and improve. That’s how youngsters evolve into top performers,” said Al Buainain.
