Newcomer Yulo makes All-around mark in fourth subdivision
DOHA: Newcomer Carlos Edriel Yulo of the Philippines quickly made a name for himself by ranking first All-around in the fourth subdivision of men’s qualifications at the 48th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships on Thursday.
“I wasn’t really expecting it,” said the 18-year-old, whose total score of 81.230 points ranked him fourth in the All-around standings after four of 10 subdivisions. “I feel happy but not satisfied. I think I can do a lot better.”
Kazakhstan led the team rankings with 239.291 points.
Men’s qualifications continue with one more subdivision on Thursday and five subdivisions on Friday.
Women’s qualifications will take place Saturday and Sunday.
Based on their performances in qualifications, competitors will advance to team, individual all-around and individual apparatus finals.
The competition will determine the winners of eight sets of medals for men (Team, All-around, Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, Still Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars, and Horizontal Bar) and six for women (Team, All-around, Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, and Floor Exercise).
The three medal-winning nations in the Team finals for both men and women will earn team berths directly to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo while the others will have further chances to qualify in 2019 and 2020.
