Our realistic medal hope is Zanetti, says Brazil manager
DOHA: Brazil is putting their medal hope on ring specialist and 2012 Olympics gold medalist Arthur Zanetti at the 48th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, which starts on October 25.
The 28-year-old, who had previously competed and won at the 2013 FIG Challenge Cup here, would be hoping to win a medal at the 10-day global competition.
“Our realistic medal hope is Zanetti. On a good day and judging by his recent form, I think we can strike gold. I'm however not ruling others out. We are here to give our best and I'm sure we are not going to leave empty handed,” team manager Leonardo Finco told worldgymdoha18.com.
The Brazilian men’s team, who had their first training at the Aspire Dome on Monday, comprises of six gymnasts and as many officials.
Besides Zanetti, Caio Souza, Lucas Bitencourt De Souza, Arthur Mariano, Francisco Barretto Junior and Luis Porto Cavalleri are the other members in the squad.
“We wanted to acclimatise quickly before the competition that’s why we arrived early. We wanted our gymnasts to get enough trainings and be familiar with the equipments. We’re happy our programme is going on as planned,” said Finco.
Though Zanetti, who won the title at the 2013 Antwerp Worlds, is their lead gymnasts, Finco added that they would target a top-24 finish in the team’s event.
“Our aim is to finish among the top-24 which will help us to qualify for next year's edition in Stuttgart, Germany,” he said.
The women’s team is expected to arrive on October 20.
