Petrounias swings to top rings mark in eighth subdivision
DOHA: Scheduled for shoulder surgery in two weeks, defending rings champion Eleftherios Petrounias of Greece put his lack of preparation aside to highlight the eighth subdivision of men’s qualifications at Aspire Dome on Friday.
Petrounias’s rings score of 15.266 points was, by a substantial margin of 0.400 points, the highest score on that apparatus thus far in qualifications.
“It was a good performance if you think that I haven’t done anything since Europeans,” said Petrounias, referring to his gold medal-winning performances at the European Championships in August, when he last performed a full rings routine. “I used all my experience and everything was good.”
Germany tolerated errors on pommel horse and high bar to tally the highest team score (241.935 points) of the subdivision, placing them seventh thus far.
Qualifications continue with two more subdivisions on Friday.
