Qatari gymnasts ready to give their best, says coach Razvan
DOHA: Qatar coach Razvan Selariu exuded confidence ahead of next month’s 48th FIG Artistic World Championships.
The competition will be held at the Aspire Dome from October 25 to November 3.
The host nation will be represented at the showpiece event by Ahmad Al Dayani and Ahmed Nabil while Jana Kiki will be country's sole women competitor.
"We've been training hard and everything has been going in the right direction. The gymnasts are in top shape and everybody is ready to give their best,” Razvan told worldgymdoha18.com.
The Romanian, who guided the Qatar team at the recently-held Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, added that his team’s target will be to reach the final of at least one apparatus.
“The championships will be tough considering the presence of top gymnasts, but we believe we can at least reach the pommel horse final going by the current form of Al Dayani. And anything can happen from there,” added the 34-year-old.
The men’s team will be traveling to Romania in a couple of days to fine-tune their preparations for the tournament.
"We are also planning to participate in one or two competitions before returning to Qatar though nothing yet has been finalised now. This is the first championships to be held in the Arab world and we hope to give it our best shot,” said Selariu, an Olympic bronze medalist with his national team at the 2004 Athens Games. “The eyes of the world will be on Doha next month. It will be a great privilege for us to do something on home soil. It looks a daunting task, but it is not impossible. We are ready to make it happen."
