Unfazed by kidney stone, Biles blazes through fifth subdivision
DOHA: Freshly discharged from the hospital and still tolerating the kidney stone she dubbed “the Doha Pearl,” Simone Biles of the USA blazed into the leading all-around spot in the fifth subdivision of women’s qualifications at Aspire Dome on Saturday.
“We’re calling it ‘the Doha Pearl’ because it’s quite large and I don’t think I’ll pass this one,” said Biles of her kidney stone, after leading the USA squad to a team total score of 174.429 points.
Biles, who performed a world-premiere vault in the last rotation, also jumped into the top of the rankings on vault, balance beam and floor exercise after five of 11 subdivisions.
Qualifications continue with one more subdivision on Saturday and five subdivisions on Sunday.
