Zonderland speaks after winning horizontal bar gold

DOHA: Comments from Epke Zonderland of the Netherlands after he won gold on horizontal bar in the men’s apparatus finals at Aspire Dome on Saturday.

On his performance and regaining his title (he won in 2013 and 2014, but finished second in 2017):

“It was a really nice routine. It felt good and there weren’t big mistakes. After two bad years before the (2016) Olympics, last year felt really good, but now I’m really back, and that feels really nice.”

On competing second among the eight finalists:

“Sometimes it’s nice to be in the front because you won’t think about what the other guys will do because you don’t know, so you have to stick to your plan and go for it.”

On his conversation with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who phoned him after he won gold:

“He said it was amazing performance. He didn’t see it yet because he was in the car, but he said his sister saw it on television and was very impressed. So he’s going to watch it quite soon.”

On his wife, who supported his participation in the championships after the recent birth of their son:

“My wife did a great job in allowing me to go here. She didn’t say she didn’t like it or anything, so I’m also really proud of my wife.”
